Sharp Tor (Dartmeet/East Dartmoor) Circular Walk, Dartmeet, Dartmoor National Park

This is a short walk but it takes you to one of Dartmoor's classic viewpoints. From the outcrops at the southern end of Sharp Tor, you look down the Dart Gorge to the South Devon coast area beyond. It's a super place for a picnic. Note that in the morning the light comes up the gorge so if you want clean views, wait until the sun arcs south and west. The Dart Gorge is stunning in Autumn when the leaves turn. They tend to be at their best in late October/early November.

Start from the car parking area on Yartor Down. This is up the steep hill east of Dartmeet. The car parking area is marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. You'll see the distinctive Sharp Tor in front of you. Paths run down a valley and then rise on the other side of the tor. The valley floor can get boggy so be prepared for a bit of Dartmoor mud and water. At Sharp Tor, wander to the top of the main outcrop. The 360 degree view is amazing and takes in the high south moor, Princetown area, Haytor Rock area and the Dart Gorge. Drop down the southern end of Sharp Tor and you come to a flat outcrop. This provides the classic view of the Dart Gorge. Bench Tor and Venford Reservoir are south of the water. Dr Blackall's Drive runs along the northern lip of the gorge.

To return, walk under the eastern side of Sharp Tor and then wander around the top of the abovementioned valley. You pass an impressive hut circle before coming to a path by the road that takes you to the car park.
