Pennywell Farm, Buckfastleigh, Dartmoor National Park

Pennywell Farm is a great day out for families with young kids. There's a huge range of things to do and animals to meet. Thankfully, all these activities are packed into a relatively small area which helps prevent tired legs. The farm animals are the focus of attention. Pennywell's miniature pigs* are the stars. If you have young kids and are holidaying in Dartmoor, Pennywell Farm is a must.

Pennywell's located just outside the eastern border of Dartmoor National Park. We've located the farm on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. From the A38 Exeter/Plymouth road, you follow a narrow lane to the farm. In holiday periods, be patient as the road gets busy. There's plenty of parking. Buy your ticket from the shop and you'll be given information about the farm and the day's special activities. You pass through an indoor area with rabbits and miniature pigs into a farmyard. The yard is lined with animal enclosures housing shire horses, llamas, donkeys, miniature ponies and more miniature pigs. Shows and displays are put on in the main barn and farmyard theatre. On either side of the farmyard are lots of other things to do. For kids, highlights include an assault course and maze, slides and rides.

Special activities run throughout the day at thirty minute intervals. These include a falconry display, ferret racing and pig racing. Whilst the farm provides a list of activities when you enter, activities are announced on loud speakers throughout the day.

Note that Pennywell Farm puts on special events throughout the year. We've taken our kids to the December nativity play. There are also Easter egg hunts, Halloween events and other activities on special days throughout the year.

Nearby, also visit Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies, the South Devon Railway and River Dart Adventures.

Similar attractions in Dartmoor National Park include Dartmoor Zoo and The Miniature Pony Centre. Outside the Park, try Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Occombe Farm. Whilst it's beyond the scope of this website, we'd also suggest you visit Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts in The English Riviera and the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.

When visiting Pennywell Farm, plan for a day trip. Kids are always tired by the end of it.

*Pennywell's miniature pigs are world famous. Promotional leaflets market them as: 'The World Famous Pennywell Miniature Pigs. The only place where you can cuddle a Pennywell miniature pig. Bred here for over 20 years, Pennywell is the original breeder of miniature pigs or as they are often called, micro, teacup and pocket pigs!'
